Growth is possible here. The teacher does not chase down the untutored student — the student must come seeking guidance. A first honest question earns a clear answer; asking the same thing over and over out of restlessness earns silence instead. Firm, patient resolve pays off.
Initial Six: To dispel folly, discipline is useful — to remove fetters. To proceed in this way alone, however, brings humiliation.
Nine in the second: Bearing fools with patience brings good fortune. To take a wife brings good fortune. The son carries the house.
Six in the third: Do not take such a maiden — the instant she sees a man of wealth, she abandons all sense of herself. This path leads nowhere good.
Six in the fourth: Trapped inside your own ignorance with no way out -- that isolation is its own humiliation.
Six in the fifth: Staying open and unassuming like a child, even here, is exactly what brings good fortune.
Nine at the top: To strike against folly. Committing an offense is not favored; warding off offenses is favored.
