Refinement brings success, though its benefit favors modest undertakings rather than grand ones.
Initial Nine: Adorning one's own feet — choosing to walk rather than ride in a fine carriage.
Six in the second: Adorning the beard — ornament that only has meaning attached to the face beneath it.
Nine in the third: Richly adorned, glossy and radiant — this brings good fortune only if it is paired with lasting integrity.
Six in the fourth: Torn between ornament and plainness, like a rider on a white horse arriving in haste — not a raider, but a suitor come at the right moment.
Six in the fifth: Adornment turns toward the simplicity of hills and gardens; the gift of silk offered is modest and small. It looks like a poor showing, but in the end it brings good fortune.
Nine at the top: Adornment stripped back to plain, unadorned white — no blame in this at all.
