Hexagram 20 · Contemplation

盥而不荐，有孚颙若。
观象征观察与垂范。如祭祀时洗净双手（盥）而尚未奉献祭品（荐）那一刻的最诚敬之态——内怀诚信、外表庄严，令人景仰。
初六 童观，小人无咎，君子吝。
六二 闚观，利女贞。
六三 观我生，进退。
六四 观国之光，利用宾于王。
九五 观我生，君子无咎。
上九 观其生，君子无咎。

盥而不荐，有孚颙若。
Picture the ritual washing of hands, done with care, before the offering itself is even set out — that same solemn sincerity draws people to look up in trust and reverence.
Initial Six: Seeing things with a child's narrow view. For someone of no particular responsibility, this is no fault; for a person meant to lead, it is a real shortcoming.
Six in the second: Peering out through a narrow gap — a fitting caution for one who must, for now, stay quietly within and hold steady.
Six in the third: Taking honest stock of one's own conduct and record — this is what should decide whether to move forward or hold back.
Six in the fourth: Witnessing the full splendor and achievement of the realm — a fitting position from which to serve as an honored advisor at court.
Nine in the fifth: Reflecting honestly on one's own conduct and its effect on others — for a person of integrity in a position of authority, this brings freedom from blame.
Nine at the top: Being watched closely by others as a model of conduct — the person of integrity remains free of blame, because their example holds up under scrutiny.
